The Seas Get Greener with New Nissan Vessel

How many automakers can say that their products are green from start to finish? We don't have an answer for that. However, Anderson Nissan of Asheville does know one company for which it's true: Nissan. Specifically, our favorite car manufacturer can proudly claim that the innovative Nissan LEAF electric conserves energy from factory to driveway.

Now, most enthusiasts know that Nissan adheres to green practices within its production plants. And we're all familiar with the fact that the LEAF brings fuel-consumption savings to any who own it. But what about that in between time? How does it abide by eco-friendly rules whilst traveling from A to B? Well, the answer comes in the form of the Nichioh Maru. Complete with 281 solar panels, the ultra-efficient cargo ship is a recent Nissan innovation made to transport the LEAF and other new Nissan vehicles in a highly-green manner.

As Tomohiko Uchiyama, the ship's operator, puts it, "This is the first domestic vessel to have photovoltaic panels. Together using LED lighting on this ship, we aim to create an energy-efficient carrier."1 Energy-efficient indeed. The Nichioh Maru, nicknamed "Roro," has the ability to save more than 1,300 tons of fuel per year. Nissan engineers have been working diligently on the seafaring car carrier for the past four years and intend to produce several more.
